Propeller Club Board of Governors passes resolution supporting Jacksonville harbor deepening

RESOLUTIONThe Propeller Club of the United States – Port of JacksonvilleWhereas, the Propeller Club of the United States – Port of Jacksonville (“Propeller Club”) was chartered on Nov. 17, 1930 and remains one of the Nation’s longest running, active clubs with nearly 200 members representing 80+ organizations related to the maritime industry in Jacksonville;Whereas, the Propeller Club is dedicated to the promotion of commerce, global trade and the maritime industry through education of the public and elected officials about the importance and necessity of waterborne commerce locally, nationally, and internationally;Whereas, the Port of Jacksonville is the No. 1 container port complex in Florida moving more than 1 million containers in 2016;Whereas, the Port of Jacksonville is one of 17 Strategic Ports in the nation, supporting the military in times of national defense;Whereas, the Port of Jacksonville has a logistical advantage compared with other regional ports in the Southeast with the past and continued investment of millions of dollars in transportation and port infrastructure; the nearby intersection of two Class I railroads and three major interstates; and more than 60 million consumers within a day’s truck drive of Jacksonville;Whereas, the important needs and considerations of protecting and maintaining the environmental health of the St. Johns River have been fully reviewed and addressed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with mitigation and monitoring plans as part of the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening project;Whereas, the deepening of the channel represents a natural evolution of Jacksonville’s harbor, which has a rich commercial maritime heritage more than 450 years in the making; andWhereas, the deepening project maintains the competitive edge of the Port of Jacksonville today, and presents a striking opportunity to support regional job growth into the future;Now therefore,BE IT RESOLVED, that the Officers and Board of Governors of the Propeller Club endorse the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening project to bring the St. Johns River channel depth to 47 feet and pledge their support to educate the public and elected officials as to the importance of this project for the vitality and economic growth of Jacksonville and the Northeast Florida region.On the 6th day of July, 2017, this resolution was proposed, voted on, and unanimously approved by the Board of Governors of the Propeller Club of the United States – Port of Jacksonville.
