In Memoriam: John (Jack) W. Connolly, Jr., 1929 - 2014
We're sad to report on the passing of John W. Connolly, Jr., who served as President of the Propeller Club of the United States - Port of Jacksonville from 1979 to 1980. Obituary and service information follows:
John W. Connolly, Jr. passed away at home with his family on July 11, 2014 at the age of 85. He was a loving and compassionate husband and father who will be dearly missed by his wife, Anne, 5 children (John, Patsy, Peggy, Chris, and Michael), their spouses, 13 grandchildren, sisters (Mary McMahon and Evelyn Meyers), as well as all those he touched through his professional and community engagement.Jack grew up in New Rochelle, NY with Hazel and John Connolly Sr., graduated from Tufts University, and moved to Jacksonville with Anne in 1958. He enjoyed a successful career in the petroleum industry for over 40 years including 24 years as president of Eastern Seaboard Petroleum and finally as president of Environmental Recovery Group. He also founded the Florida Spillage Control Association and acted as Chairman of the Port Authority for several years.Beyond professional accomplishments, Jack was deeply committed to serving the community. He advised or led organizations including The Bolles School, Jacksonville University, Jacksonville Marine Institute, Propeller Club, JCCI, Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow), St. Vincent's Foundation, San Jose Manor, and the Salvation Army. Jack loved to travel with his family and working on his golf game, and the San Jose and St. Michael's Catholic parishes. He will be fondly remembered for his genuine care for others, business integrity, reliable leadership, and a smile that would light up a room.His family will receive friends on Wednesday evening July 16, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley- Heard at 6:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, at St Michael's Catholic Church of Fernandina Beach. A reception will immediately follow at Oxley Heard Funeral Home, 1305 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach, FL. A private family burial will held at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Salvation Army.
