University of North Florida (UNF) Senior Steven Garcia has been the recipient of the Propeller Club of the United States – Port of Jacksonville scholarship for the last two years. Congratulations, Steven! Here is more info about his studies and his leadership:
I am currently a senior at UNF and plan to complete my studies in the Fall of 2016. My majors are Transportation and Logistics and Business Management, which I declared when I started as a freshman.
I joined the Propeller Club Student Port at UNF (Transportation and Logistics Society) as a freshman and have held multiple officer positions. I attended the Intermodal Association of North America IANA Expo in Long Beach, CA as a member of a case competition team and student representative. I met many professionals in the transportation and Intermodal industry, learned a lot on the trade show floor, and enjoyed a boat tour the Port of Long Beach!
From March 6 to August 12, 2015 I participated in a semester abroad in Bremen, Germany. In addition to my coursework, I visited the Volkswagen Autostadt in Wolfsburg and the Becks plant in Bremen. While in Europe I traveled extensively and noted the abundance of public transport, especially when compared to the United States. My time in Europe was a great learning experience and opened my eyes to the importance of the global economy.
I am an active member of the UNF Honors Program, having held leadership positions in the Honors Student Union. After returning from Germany I immediately resumed my work with the Honors Program both as a teaching assistant and a leader in the Honors Community and helped draft the first ever Constitution for the Honors Student Union. In October the UNF Honors Program received a transformational gift from David and Ann Hicks. The Honors Program is now called the Hicks Honors College, the sixth academic college at UNF.
I have been the recipient of the annual Propeller Club scholarship for the last 2 years. With financial support from the Propeller Club Port of Jacksonville I am able to take advantage of opportunities and make the most of my experience at UNF, while at the same time keeping student loans to a minimum. I am a very grateful to the Propeller Club for supporting me and the members of the Student Port at UNF.
